Cyber Security - Earn 6 Figures After 90 Days Of Study
Maybe It's a tagline that sounds familiar. Littered across e-books and home brand marketing campaigns, it reads as an easy step to a lucrative career. If you're reading this, you may already know this as false, or an anomaly from what is a reality for most. This blog post is aimed at individuals of all ages on how to get into a career in cyber which is rewarding and exciting and will aim to debunk and disprove corny misleading one-liners while telling my story so far.
Here's a run down to quickly get you up to speed
- 2017 - I was taking a "digital technology's" subject in high school, quickly realising I had a passion for technology. It was also around this time that I discovered Cyber Security as a career option and learnt about the emerging university degrees.
- 2018 - After finishing my final year, I decided to study 'Cyber Security and Network Systems' at university.
- 2019 - I started my degree the following year, not knowing exactly what was involved. While I had buzzwords like 'ethical hacker', 'white-hat' and 'penetration-testing', I was still unsure what my career would look like.
- 2021
- After three years of study on a wide range of technology subjects in my degree, I was still slightly lost on what security professionals spent their day doing. Keen to understand more, I attended a local security networking night.
- Networking nights opened doors to a wide range of industry connections and rapidly progressed my understanding of security fields and careers. This led to security branch meetings, a work placement as well resources which were highly recommended.
- In the same year, I also applied to a range of different jobs and graduate programs which focused on security, and technology more broadly, and accepted an offer to work as an associate consultant at a security firm, working as a penetration tester.
- 2023 - Now a security consultant, I work on a broad range of systems and environments, understanding their security weaknesses and helping organisations improve their security posture.
